The small park just in front of the Public Landing Restaurant and Banquet Center once had a reconstructed `Settlement Village'; which was `collected' and placed there in 1973. There were 12 buildings, six original. A blacksmith shop, barn and others were replicas constructed with original lumber and materials.
Many area schools visited these buildings on field trips to get an idea what life was like on the Illinois prairies back in the 1800s. The village featured an real 1830s log cabin, as well as a 19th century schoolhouse, and train depot.
The Buildings were in need of repair, and an idea to make a
more open space was decided upon. The center will have a statue of
Abraham Lincoln. And the collection of buildings have found a new
home.
We will miss the unusual village. Often during the day on weekends
the performers who dressed in period outfits would come into the
restaurant for a break, coffee, conversation and
peach cobbler!
They loved our peach cobbler.
We look forward to the new landscape design and to the new
statue, and invite you to watch with us the new parks progress,.
